Ingredients
To make this delicious homemade tomato sauce recipe, you will need the following ingredients:
- 2 28-ounce cans of whole peeled San Marzano tomatoes
- 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 4 garlic cloves, thinly sliced
- 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
- Salt and fresh ground pepper to taste
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh basil leaves
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley leaves
Note: You can adjust the amount of garlic, red pepper flakes, basil and parsley to your tastes.
Instructions
1. Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.
2. Add chopped onion and cook until soft, for about 5 minutes.
3. Add thinly sliced garlic and cook for about 1 minute.
4. Add crushed red pepper flakes and cook for another 30 seconds.
5. Add both cans of tomatoes with their juices and stir to combine.
6. Bring the sauce to a simmer and reduce the heat to low.
7. Let the sauce simmer for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
8. Use an immersion blender to blend the sauce until smooth.
9. Add chopped basil and parsley to the sauce and stir to combine.
10. Season with salt and fresh ground pepper to taste.
11. Let the sauce simmer for another 10-15 minutes to allow the flavors to blend together.
12. Serve the sauce over your favorite pasta or use it as a base for pizza, lasagna or any dish that requires tomato sauce.
