How to Make Your Own Pasta: A Step-by-Step Guide

Making your own pasta at home may seem daunting, but with a few simple ingredients and some patience, you can have fresh, delicious pasta in no time. In this article, we’ll guide you through the process of making your own pasta dough and shaping it into different pasta shapes. Let’s get started!

Ingredients

To make homemade pasta, you will need:
- 2 cups of all-purpose flour
- 3 large eggs
- 1 tsp of salt
- 1 tbsp of water

Note: If you want to make colored pasta, you can add different ingredients like spinach, beetroot puree, or squid ink.

Preparing the Dough

1. Start by pouring 2 cups of flour onto a clean work surface.
2. Create a well in the center of the flour pile and add 3 beaten eggs, 1 tsp of salt, and 1 tbsp of water.
3. Using a fork, mix the eggs and flour until thoroughly combined.
4. Next, use your hands to knead the dough until it becomes smooth and elastic.
5. Cover the dough with plastic wrap and let it rest for 30 minutes.

Shaping the Pasta

1. Divide the dough into four equal parts.
2. Take one piece of dough and, using a rolling pin or pasta maker, roll it out into a thin sheet.
3. Once the dough is rolled out, you can cut it into different shapes. Here are a few options:
- Tagliatelle: Thin, flat noodles about ¼ inch wide.
- Fettuccine: Wider flat noodles about ½ inch wide.
- Lasagna: Large, flat sheets used for layering in a lasagna.
- Ravioli: Small, stuffed pasta parcels.
4. Once you’ve shaped your pasta, it’s ready to cook! Bring a pot of salted water to a boil and cook the pasta for 2-3 minutes (or until al dente).
