Working out outdoors can be invigorating, but it also comes with risks. Follow these five tips to stay safe while sweating in the great outdoors.
1. Dress appropriately
Wear lightweight, breathable clothes and shoes with good traction. Dress in layers so you can adjust as the temperature changes.
2. Stay hydrated
Drink water before, during, and after your workout. Bring a water bottle with you and take sips regularly.
3. Wear sunscreen
Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher 15 minutes before you head outside. Reapply every two hours.
4. Be aware of your surroundings
Scope out the area where you plan to exercise beforehand. Watch for uneven surfaces, obstacles, and other hazards. If you're exercising on roads, run against traffic and follow traffic rules.
5. Tell someone where you're going
Before you head out, let someone know your route and estimated return time. Bring your phone and carry identification with you in case of emergency.
