Halloween is around the corner and it's time to start thinking about costumes. Instead of buying a pre-packaged costume, why not get creative and make your own? Bricolage is a technique that involves using what you have on hand to create something new. Here are 5 DIY costume ideas for Halloween using Bricolage techniques that are easy to make and won't break the bank.
1. Ghost Dress
Create a ghost dress by using an old white sheet. Cut a hole in the center of the sheet for your head and cut the sheet to the desired length. Use scissors to shred the bottom of the sheet to give it a tattered look. Wear a white dress or leggings and a top underneath the sheet. Add makeup to complete the ghostly look.
2. Bat Wings
Make bat wings using black felt, scissors, and elastic bands. Cut two large wing shapes out of the felt and attach them together with a strip of felt. Sew elastic bands onto the back of the wings to make them easy to wear. Pair the bat wings with black clothes and a headband with bat ears.
3. Cat Ears and Tail
Create cat ears and a tail using black felt, pipe cleaners, and a headband. Cut two ear shapes out of the felt and attach them to the headband using the pipe cleaners. Cut a tail shape out of the felt and attach it to the back of your pants or skirt using safety pins. Wear all black clothes to complete the cat costume.
4. Vampire Cape
Make a vampire cape using black fabric, scissors, and a sewing machine. Cut a large rectangle out of the fabric and hem the edges. Use a fabric glue or sew on a red silk lining to the inside of the cape, and add a collar using black felt. Pair the cape with black clothes and vampire makeup.
5. Pumpkin Costume
Use orange fabric to create a pumpkin costume. Cut two pumpkin shapes out of the fabric and sew them together, leaving holes for your head, arms, and legs. Stuff the pumpkin with pillow stuffing or old clothes to give it shape. Cut a jack-o-lantern face out of black felt and attach it to the front. Wear orange tights and a black sweater underneath the pumpkin.
