Being a homeowner can be daunting, especially when it comes to tackling DIY repairs. However, not all repairs require a professional handyman or plumber. Here are 10 simple DIY repairs every homeowner should know to save time and money.

Unclogging a Drain

Pour boiling water down the drain, followed by ½ cup of baking soda. Wait a few minutes and pour 1 cup of vinegar down the drain. Cover the drain with a plug or cloth and wait 10-15 minutes before flushing the drain with boiling water.

Fixing a Leaky Faucet

Turn off the water supply and plug the drain. Remove the decorative cap on the faucet handle and unscrew the handle. Use pliers to remove the nut and remove the washer. Replace the washer and reassemble the faucet.

Replacing a Light Switch

Turn off the power to the light switch. Unscrew the faceplate and remove the mounting screws from the switch. Gently pull out the switch and disconnect the wires. Connect the wires to the new switch and reassemble the switch and faceplate.

Painting a Room

Cover the floor and furniture with drop cloths. Prep the walls by filling holes and sanding rough spots. Use painter’s tape to protect baseboards and trim. Paint the walls using a roller and brush.

Fixing a Running Toilet

Turn off the water supply and flush the toilet. Remove the tank lid and adjust the float to the correct level. Replace the flapper valve if necessary.

Replacing a Door Lock

Remove the old lock and install the new lock according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Make sure that the latch bolt lines up with the hole in the door jamb.

Unclogging a Toilet

Use a plunger to try and dislodge the blockage. If the plunger doesn’t work, use a toilet auger to remove the blockage.

Replacing a Light Fixture

Turn off the power and remove the old light fixture. Install the mounting bracket and connect the wires to the new fixture according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Cut a piece of drywall slightly larger than the hole. Use drywall screws to attach the patch to the wall. Apply drywall tape and joint compound to smooth out the edges. Sand and paint the area to match the surrounding wall.

Sealing a Drafty Window

Clean the window frame and apply a bead of caulk along the seam between the window frame and the wall. Smooth the caulk with a caulk smoothing tool.
